Douglas L. Smith, 50, of West Broad Street, Williamstown, passed away unexpectedly Friday while responding to a fire call.
Born in Pottsville, June 3, 1960, a son of Harold and Emma Jane Leuschner Smith, Williamstown.
Doug was a 1978 graduate of Williams Valley High School and Thaddeus Stevens College. Doug served 22 years with the Army National Guard.
He recently retired as an automotive mechanic with the Support Maintenance Shop with the National Guard at Ft. Indiantown Gap.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamstown; a 29 year member of the Liberty Hose Company #1, Williamstown where he currently was the chief driver, he formerly served as president, tresaurer and assistant fire chief. He was also a driver with Williamstown EMS; He was a member of the Williamstown American Legion, Dauphin County Firemans Association. He was member of the Liberty Hose Company Band, Lykens and a was a member of the former Williamstown Military Band.
Doug's life revolved around helping others in the community. His daughter was his pride and joy, whom he dearly loved and was very proud of. He enjoyed cooking and baking.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his daughter, Leah M. Smith, at home; one brother David A. Smith and his wife Jode, Williamstown; one nephew, Dylan Smith, Williamstown and many friends.
Memorial services will be held Thursday July 15th at 11:00 am from the Immanuel Lutheran Church, East and Vine Streets, Williamstown with the Rev. Kathleen Kuehl officiating. Visitation will be from 9-11 am at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to the Liberty Hose Company #1, W. Broad Street, Williamstown, PA 17098 or the Williamstown EMS, P.O. Box 74, Williamstown PA 17098.
