Brenda Marie Garber, 76, of Elizabethville, passed away peacefully Saturday night, March 23, 2024 at the Capital Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center surrounded by her family.
Born in Leonardtown, Maryland, January 10, 1948, a daughter of the late William and Hilda Watts Mattingly. She was a 1967 graduate of Choptincon High School.
Brenda dedicated her life to her family. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her great grandchildren brought her much joy and happiness in recent years. As her children got older, she volunteered and was eventually employed with the Elizabethville YMCA. She was affectionately called "Nana" by the children at the YMCA's kid's night every Friday.
She was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Lykens, where she was a CCD teacher for several years. She was extremely proud of her husband, who serves as the deacon for the parish.
Brenda was an avid gardener and took great pride in the flower beds.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved great granddaughter, Mackenzie Garber, 2019, whom she dearly missed. She was also preceded in death by five siblings, Shirley Nickerson, Martha Fischer, Joan Lahman, and Kenneth and Dale Mattingly.
Surviving are her loving husband of 54 years, Deacon George M. Garber; three children, Richard Garber (Lourdes), Tuscan, Arizona, April James (Harry), Elizabethville, and John Garber (Polly Smith), Lykens; four grandchildren, Arielle, Zachary, Richard Jr., and Arlene Garber; five great grandchildren, Shiloh Garber, whom Brenda and Deacon George helped raise and adopted, Jacob Garber, Liam and Gabrielle Bohner, and Avery Garber; five brothers, William, Robert, Dennis, Roy, and John Mattingly; eight sisters, Sharon Connelly, Linda Pistachio, Gloria Turbyne, Debrah Majkut, Theresa Mayor, Anna Braithwaite, Mary Carol Gisoldi, and Leona Butler; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish with Revs. Michael Opoki AJ and Frank Karwacki as concelebrants. Viewing will be from 9:30-11:00 at the church. Brenda will be laid to rest in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow at the Williamstown American Legion.
