Robert R. Murray, Sr., 87, of Williamstown passed away peacefully, Wednesday morning, October 16, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family.
Born in Williamstown on Sunday, August 29, 1937, a son of the late John Sr. and Eva Hunter Murray. He was a 1956 graduate of the former Williamstown High School.
Bob retired after 30 years of employment from the former ACME Market, Tower City, where he was an assistant manager.
He was a longtime member of the former Ebenezer EC Church, Williamstown, where he served as a trustee. He was a member of the Ashlar Lodge F&AM 570 and the Harrisburg Scottish Rites. Bob was also a member of the Williamstown American Legion and the Liberty Hose Company #1, Williamstown.
He was a talented baseball player while he was in high school and after graduating, he continued playing in numerous leagues including the Harrisburg Citizens. Once he stopped playing baseball, he continued his love of the sport by cheering on the Boston Red Sox and coaching little league and teeners. He was one of the founding members of the Williamstown Youth Athletic Association.
Bob had a sense of humor like none other and always made his family laugh. His family was the center of his world and he will be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He also had a very strong bond with his beloved dog, Oreo. Bob enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, and he and Jo always looked forward to their trips to Florida.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert Murray, Jr., 2010; sisters, Dorothy Zimmerman and Betty Umholtz; brothers, John "Jack", Kenneth, William, and infant brother, Joseph Murray.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Jo Hawk Murray; his daughter, Kimberley Zappasodi and her husband Steve, Lebanon; two granddaughters, Lindsey Williams, Lykens, and Brittany Zappasodi, Harrisburg; three great grandchildren, Paige, Parker, and Presley Jo; nephews and nieces including, Candy Chapus and Michelle Gitke; close family friends, Dennis Wolfe and Jason Kramer.
Masonic services will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of the Dimon Funeral Home. Following the masonic service, funeral services will be held with Pastor Annette Shutt officiating. Viewing will be from 10-11 at the chapel. Bob will be laid to rest in the Calvary United Methodist Cemetery, Wiconisco. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow at the Williamstown American Legion.
