Sara Markel Obituary

Sara E. Markel, 89, of Halifax, passed away Friday, February 6, 2026 at her home.

Born in Jackson Township, a daughter of the late Marlin and Mary Meckley Sweigard.

Sara was a 1954 graduate of the former Boyer Memorial High School, Halifax.

She was retired from the clerical department of the former Halifax National Bank.

Sara was a lifetime member of the Word of Life Chapel, Halifax where she served as the church organist for over 40 years.  Sara taught  piano lessons for many years, and music was an important part of her life. She was also a member of the Halifax Garden Club and the Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, canning. Sara always looked forward to her daily breakfast with her friends at McDonalds. Above all family was everything to Sara, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Markel, 2014 and a sister, Patricia Zimmerman.

Surviving are her four children, Margene Imboden, James Markel (Debbie), Anita Hatch (Kelvin) and Susan McCleery (James); seven grandchildren, Nathan, Nicole, Austin, Kiersten, Kyle, Kaley and Aleisha; seven great grandchildren, Caleb, Ava, Lincoln, Ezra, Lily, Eloise and Stephen; two sisters, Marlene Miller and Linda Sue Davies.  Nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Friday February 13, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. from the Word of Life Chapel, 27 Fellowship Drive, Halifax with her Pastor Zach Willis officiating. A visitation will be held from 1-2 pm.  Sara will be laid to rest privately beside her husband in the Riverview Memorial Gardens, Halifax.

Please omit flowers. Instead, memorial donations in Sara's memory can be made to Friends in Action International, 2950 E. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown, PA 17057.
